Toronche Phase I: Conservation and Ecological Agriculture (1995–1998)

Current Status:

This initiative supported 27 San Pedro de Vilcabamba families by implementing tree nurseries with micro-pressure and drip irrigation systems. A natural forest model was created for training and cultivation, producing fruit trees, timber, and cattle feed. With financing from the European Community, ICCO, and SSR, 21 hectares of agroecological gardens were developed, reducing forest fire risks and protecting water sources.


Toronche Phase II: Strengthening Local Capacity (1999–2000)

Current Status:

Building on Phase I, this project educated the same 27 families on farm planning, organizational development, and sustainable practices. Financed by ICCO and SSR, it established ALIAGRO, an organic agricultural group, and resulted in comprehensive land-use plans for the Uchima River watershed.


Shuar de Tayunts Tourism Business (2000–2001)

Current Status:

In the Upper Nangaritza Basin, 10 Shuar communities strengthened their organizational and eco-tourism capabilities. Supported by the Podocarpus Program (Embassy of Holland), the project boosted economic activity for 150 families, built eco-tourism facilities, and preserved the Shuar identity and biodiversity.


Development of Agri-Ecological Irrigation (2001–2002)

Current Status:

A feasibility study for a pressure irrigation system was conducted for 130 families near Podocarpus National Park. With support from the National University of Loja and the Podocarpus Program, the project laid the groundwork for improved water management and sustainable farming.


Permaculture Pilot Farm (1998–2001)

Current Status:

A demonstration farm was created to showcase sustainable agricultural techniques, including organic vegetable cultivation and small-animal farming. Funded through private donations, it became a hub for community learning and exchange.


Specialty Coffee for Export (2004–2005) 

Current Status: This Coffee is still exported to Germany

This project improved the quality of local coffee to meet German market standards. Training in cultivation, washing, and commercialization increased incomes for 45 coffee-growing families. Partners included FAPECAFES, CORECAF, and the German Cooperation (GTZ).


Marmalade and Yogurt Production in Yangana (2005–2006) 

Current Status:

This initiative provided equipment and training for producing marmalades and yogurt, benefiting 36 families. Financed by the German Embassy and local councils, it strengthened local enterprises and improved livelihoods.


Achira Starch Production and Commercialization (2006–2008)

Current Status:

Twenty-three families in Palmira benefited from this project, which revived achira cultivation and created a small starch production business. Funded by W. Peter Schmitz Stiftung, it boosted family incomes and preserved traditional practices.


Organic Coffee Production Improvement (2007–2008)

Current Status:

This project strengthened 400 coffee-growing families and provided training in diversification, coffee plant rehabilitation, and improved processing techniques. Funded by Manos Unidas, it resulted in a 50% increase in coffee sales and strengthened regional organizations.


Organic Horticulture Gardens (2008–2009):
Supporting five schools with vegetable gardens, training, and micro-irrigation systems, impacting 300 families. Funded by the German Embassy.


Agroforestry System Diversification (2008–2010):
Training 80 families in crop diversification, conservation, and infrastructure development, supported by the World Environment Fund.


Community Plant Production Center (2008–2009):
In partnership with the Peace Corps, this center focuses on raising plant species, training in organic farming, and supporting coffee growers.


Future Initiatives

Colinas Verdes aims to expand efforts in reforestation, sustainable agro-industries, and community education. Key focus areas include promoting non-forest products like honey and artisan goods, improving crop diversity, and enhancing local livelihoods in Southern Ecuador.

Rehabilitation post-fire destruction of the 4000 hectares of land in the San Pedro de Vilcabamba/Loja area.
